Issues that Can Be Diagnosed with a Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy from our skilled Yakima gastroenterologists can help your doctor diagnose and treat issues in the digestive system, such as:

  • Unexplained abdominal pain
  • Chronic constipation and diarrhea
  • Rectal itching
  • Blood, pus, or mucus in the stool
  • Polyps
  • Cancer
  • And other intestinal problems

The Colonoscopy Procedure

A tiny digital camera on the end of a long, plastic tube, called a colonoscope, is inserted into the anus during a colonoscopy. It delivers imagery to a monitor, offering a detailed view of colon/large intestine tissue and structures. For this reason, your bowels must be empty for the procedure to ensure clear imagery.

Our staff will instruct you to avoid consuming food or liquids several hours before your colonoscopy to achieve a more detailed view. Be sure to discuss medicines and supplements you are taking and when to stop them before your exam. We will also give you a bowel preparation kit, including laxatives, to stimulate bowel movements and clear your bowels.

We will give you IV sedatives during the procedure to ensure you will not experience pain or discomfort. You will lie on your side, and our gastroenterologist will gently insert the colonoscope into the anus and the colon, introducing air to enhance the imagery. The gastroenterologist will then examine the colon lining while withdrawing the scope, taking pictures or tissue samples as necessary. The colonoscopy procedure usually takes about 30-45 minutes, but you should budget 2-3 hours from check-in to recovery.

After the colonoscopy, you may experience bloating, gas, and mild cramping. You may eat a light snack after about an hour of recovery. We advise scheduling someone to drive you home because of sedative side effects. Rest assured; you can expect to return to normal activities the following day.

Imaging Services Offered Alongside Colonoscopy

In some cases, additional imaging services may be necessary to provide a more detailed picture. For this reason, Direct Imaging’s colonoscopy doctors also offer:

Sigmoidoscopy offers a more detailed view of the lower colon, the structure closest to the anus.

CT scans

Your physician may request a CT scan in combination with a colonoscopy to gain insight into the condition of adjacent organs and tissues.
