What's an X-Ray?

X-Rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation that go through the skin to reveal images of the bone. They are the most commonly used form of diagnostic imaging used in the medical industry today. The images produced are shades of gray, with bones showing as white and soft tissue as gray. X-Rays are non-invasive, quickly produced, and normally take just a few minutes.

X-Rays are appropriate for:
  • Bones
  • Pneumonia
  • Abnormal Masses & Tumors
  • Foreign Objects inside the body
  • Calcifications
  • Dental Problems

X-Rays do use an ionizing radiation, so are not as safe as some of the other forms of imaging. The risk increases with the number of X-Rays given over the life of an individual. The risk of developing cancer from X-Ray radiation exposure is considered generally small, with the benefits significantly outweighing the risks.

What is the procedure like?

X-Rays are typically taken with you laying down on an examination table, or standing up in front of the X-Ray equipment, depending on the areas being imaged. You will be asked to wear a hospital gown, remove jewelry in the area being imaged, and possibly be required to wear a lead apron. A radiologic technologist will guide and assist you in placement of your body, for the most accurate images. The process is relatively quick, and painless, and usually takes only a few minutes.
