What's an MRI?

Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging is a method of producing clear images of the inside of your body using magnets, radio waves, and a computer to produce images. They’re a safe way to get the most accurate pictures of your body. MRI’s are appropriate for diagnosing and monitoring health conditions. They’re routinely used for:
  • Brain and Spinal Cord Issues or Injuries
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Blood Vessels
  • Bone and Joint Damage or Diseases
  • Breasts and Ovaries
  • Liver, kidney, and pancreas
  • Prostate

What is the procedure like?

A typical closed MRI machine is a large tube with a table that slides through the middle of it (see image at the top of this page). You lie on the table and the table slides into the tube where the test takes place. During the test, the magnet and radio waves will scan your body to produce images. Some MRI tests require that a contrast dye be injected into a vein in your arm, which will help make some of the structures inside your body become even more visible to the MRI technology.

A diagnostic test can last up to two hours, so the experience can be stressful and/or uncomfortable for many people who are claustrophobic or obese. However, MRI’s are safer than X-rays because they don’t use radiation.
