What's a Fluoroscopy?

A Fluoroscopy is a moving X-ray that shows a live feed of images of the inside of your body on a monitor. During the procedure, an X-ray beams through your body and transmits the images to a screen continuously, so your doctor sees real-time moving images of structures within your body. This is an invaluable part of interventional medicine and has many advantages over more invasive surgical procedures.

Fluoroscopy is appropriate for seeing your body’s systems, including:

  • Skeletal and Muscular
  • Respiratory
  • Reproductive
  • Digestive
  • Urinary
  • Organs including your Heart, Kidneys, and Lungs

Fluoroscopies are often useful in diagnostic testing, exams and surgical procedures for Barium X-rays, Arthrography, guided anesthetic injections, and upper gastrointestinal and esophageal testing. Fluoroscopy can also be used to place contrast into specific joints prior an MRI.

What is the procedure like?

Procedures vary, based on the type of fluoroscopy needed. If dye is necessary, you may get an injection, or the dye may be in oral or enema form. The exam takes place either with you laying on a table, or with you standing. A radiologic technologist will guide and instruct you, while the physician observes the the screen to get a clear idea of what is happening inside your body.
