What's a CT Scan?

Computed tomography, or CT scan, is a combination of X-rays and computer imaging, to display a cross-section of your body. They show tissues and organs in more detail than a standard X-ray.

CT scans are appropriate for those who need images of their:

What is the procedure like?

A standard CT scan takes approximately 30 minutes. During the scan, you may need to wear a hospital gown and will need to remove all jewelry.

The procedure itself, entails laying on a table that moves through a donut-shaped tube around you (see image at the top of this page).  If contrast material is part of your CT scan, you may need to have a blood test ahead of time. A CT scan of your abdomen and/or pelvis may require you to drink something prior upon your arrival.

A trained radiologic technologist will guide and instruct you through the process, telling you how to lay on the table, when to hold your breath (if necessary) and run the CT machine.  The CT machine will rotate around your body to create images from several angles. It’s quick and painless.

You don’t need to do anything different or special after the scan, you can resume your daily activities. A radiologist will oversee the imaging process and interpret the images. Your reports will be available within 24 hours.
