What’s a Carotid Ultrasound Clinic?

The carotid ultrasounds taken at our clinic produce imaging on the two carotid arteries located on each side of your neck. These arteries transport blood from your heart to your brain. By examining the imaging produced by the ultrasound, your healthcare provider can assess your risk for specific health conditions, such as plaque narrowing or blocking the carotid arteries, which indicates an increased risk of stroke.

Issues that Can Be Diagnosed and Treated with a Carotid Ultrasound

Your healthcare provider may recommend a carotid ultrasound if you’ve recently suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke, or when your doctor detects abnormal sounds in your carotid arteries (using a stethoscope), and to evaluate blood flow disruptions like blood clots (hematomas).

Your doctor may also advise you to get a carotid ultrasound if you have certain medical conditions. These include conditions that increase your risk of strokes, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, diabetes, atrial fibrillation or a family history of stroke or heart disease.

Your healthcare provider may also order a carotid ultrasound to evaluate procedures, such as the placement and performance of stents (tubes used to improve arterial blood flow) or to verify the success of carotid plaque removal surgery.

The Carotid Ultrasound Procedure

Our technicians perform carotid ultrasounds using a small, handheld device called a transducer, which records echoes of soundwaves to produce a live image on a monitor. You’ll lie on your back, with your head positioned to offer access to your neck. We will apply a warm gel to your skin, pressing the transducer gently to your neck to obtain the necessary images. The procedure is fast and painless and typically takes about 30 minutes.

How Many Visits Will You Need?

Additional testing may be required if you have any of the above conditions or have recently suffered a stroke. Tests could include a cardiac stress test, ankle-brachial index test, and abdominal ultrasound as needed to diagnose your condition and create a treatment plan to decrease stroke risk.

If your carotid ultrasound results are unclear, your doctor could also recommend a computerized tomography angiogram (CTA) scan, which involves a series of X-rays, or an MRI to get a more thorough look at your blood vessels.

Avoid high hospital prices and long commutes into Seattle, Tacoma, or Spokane at Direct Imaging’s carotid ultrasound clinic. Ask your healthcare provider for a referral to our Yakima imaging center or contact us to schedule an appointment today.
